LAND

The property has been developed as an intensive vineyard, where possible with notable features pertaining to the land summarised as follows:

SHAPE & WORKABILITY

The vineyard development is contained in a number of blocks that has been dictated by the contour of the land. From a viticulture perspective though, it can allow for various blocks to be established and identified portraying unique sites that can influence the quality and quantity of grapes produced within a single vineyard. Due to the contour of the land and the mixed uses of land, there is a large amount of area uncontained in the vineyards that has ornamental and aesthetic value to the property, but limited added value in respect of a commercial vineyard property.

The majority of the property is situated on an elevated terrace above the Awatere River corridor. There are some lower terraces adjoining the Awatere River corridor, although we are advised that these are not prone to flooding.

The property has been fully planted in Sauvignon Blanc variety and is established on 2.4-metre rows with 1.8 metre between the vines within the rows. The trellising for the vineyard has utilised timber strainers of increased length than normal strainers, together with 110mm quarter round posts as the internal timber structures. The internal bays are positioned at a spacing of 7.2 metre with four vines per bay. The trellising includes an irrigation wire, with irrigation positioned off the ground, two fruiting wires and four tucking wires. A large portion of the stage 2 (2005) plantings, consist of an irrigation wire and one or two fruiting wires with no tucking wires. These vines are still establishing and yet to reach or require the additional tucking wires.

All the plants have been grown on selected rootstocks and clones, which provide certainty for vine health and resistance into the future. The vineyard has been orientated where possibly on a near north-south access, although some rows vary from this, depending on the shapes of the block are the most effective way to undertake vineyard establishment.
